LESSON 4 · Wisdom of the East

Yin and Yang

The yin-yang symbol represents the Daoist view that reality is made of complementary opposites in dynamic balance. Light contains the seed of dark; activity contains the seed of rest; growth contains the seed of decay.

Neither side is good or bad. Day requires night. Inhaling requires exhaling. Pushed too far, anything flips into its opposite: working without rest produces burnout, which forces rest; sustained aggression provokes resistance.
