Why Horror Endures

Horror is the most recession-proof genre because it is cheap to produce and reliable at the box office. A dark room, a strange sound, and a well-timed cut cost almost nothing yet generate intense reactions that expensive spectacles cannot match.

Part of the appeal is physical. A scare floods the body with the sensations of danger, and the relief that follows — once you remember you are safe — can feel like a genuine high.

This is why horror evolves but never disappears. The monsters change — ghosts, slashers, demons, social anxieties — but the appeal stays the same. We will always want safe ways to rehearse our deepest fears.
