LESSON 2 · Why Genres Make You Feel

Why Comedy Is Hard

Editing comedy is a precision science. A cut one frame too early or too late kills a joke. Edgar Wright's films show this with cuts so rhythmically tight they work like visual percussion. The pause between setup and punchline — whether physical or verbal — is everything.

Comedy also ages the fastest of any genre. What a culture finds funny reveals its boundaries and anxieties, and those shift constantly. Jokes that killed in 1985 can feel offensive or incomprehensible in 2025. This means comedy is the most accurate time capsule any culture produces.
