LESSON 2 · Why Genres Make You Feel

Physical Comedy's Science

The best physical comedy is engineered, not improvised. Jackie Chan combines martial-arts choreography with slapstick timing, and his fights are funny because they obey comedy's rhythm — setup, escalation, payoff — using the human body as the punchline. Every collision is staged to land on the beat.

It also travels further than any other comedy. A person slipping on a banana peel is funny in every culture because the humor targets universal physical vulnerability, not local knowledge. That is why silent slapstick still lands a century later.
