The Obstacle Machine

Every romance film needs obstacles — class differences, timing, rival suitors, personal flaws. These obstacles exist because the audience already knows the couple will unite. The pleasure comes from watching how they overcome barriers, and the best romances make those barriers feel genuinely threatening enough to create doubt.

The sophistication of the obstacle determines the film's quality. A misunderstanding is cheap. A genuine incompatibility that characters must grow to resolve — that is where great romance lives, in transformation through love.
