Chemistry on Screen
Screen chemistry cannot be manufactured. Casting directors test actors together because the spark between two performers either exists or it does not. Bogart and Bacall, Hepburn and Tracy, Ryan and Hanks — these pairings transcended their scripts.
What reads as chemistry is mostly timing: two actors who anticipate each other's reactions, trading looks and lines in a rhythm that feels effortless and unrehearsed.
This is why recasting rarely works in romance sequels. The audience bonded with a specific pairing, not with two interchangeable roles. Replace one actor, and the rhythm is gone.
