LESSON 3 · Visionary Directors
The Blockbuster Era
When Jaws (1975) was shot, the mechanical shark kept breaking down, forcing Spielberg to suggest the shark rather than show it. The less audiences saw, the more terrified they became. For Spielberg it became a lasting lesson: limitation breeds creativity.

Raiders of the Lost Ark perfected the action-adventure template with relentless pacing, practical effects, and character-driven humor. Spielberg's gift was making complex filmmaking look effortless, so a chase feels weightless and inevitable even though staging it was brutally hard. That invisible technical sophistication is the hardest achievement of all.
