LESSON 5 · Visionary Directors
Time as Material
Nolan treats time not as a sequence but as a structure that can be bent. Memento runs backward. Inception nests dreams within dreams, each running at different speeds. Dunkirk intercuts three timelines — land (one week), sea (one day), air (one hour) — converging at a single climactic moment.

This is not gimmickry. Nolan uses temporal structure to create emotional effects impossible in conventional chronology. Memento's reversed order forces the audience to experience memory loss alongside the protagonist. Inception's nested timelines create exponentially mounting stakes.
