The Audience Mirror

Character arcs work because of psychological identification. When audiences watch a character struggle and transform, they unconsciously project their own struggles onto the screen. This is why flawed characters are more compelling than perfect ones — the flaws create entry points for identification.

The most resonant arcs address universal human tensions: security versus freedom, duty versus desire, truth versus comfort. These conflicts never resolve permanently in real life, which is why we keep watching characters work through them.
