The Art of Saying Less

Great dialogue follows principles that apply beyond cinema:

• Film dialogue creates the illusion of natural speech through careful artifice
• The most important meaning lives in the words not spoken
• Characters should be identifiable by speech patterns alone
• Silences and pauses can carry more weight than spoken words
• Every line advances plot, reveals character, and creates subtext at once

The paradox is that the more artificial dialogue is, the more real it sounds. Real speech is messy and full of filler. Film takes that mess and compresses it into something that feels true. The best lines sound spontaneous. They are anything but.
