LESSON 4 · The Craft of Screen Storytelling

Movement Tells Stories

Camera movement is never neutral. A tracking shot following a character creates identification. A static shot watching a character creates distance. A crane shot rising above the action creates omniscience. Each movement tells the audience how to feel about what they are seeing.

The single-take approach of Birdman and 1917 traps the audience in continuous present — no editing provides relief or perspective. The unbroken shot communicates that there is no escape for the character or the viewer alike.
