LESSON 5 · The Craft of Screen Storytelling

The Second Viewing

Great plot twists reveal essential truths about storytelling:

  • The rewatch test separates genuine twists from cheap tricks
  • Good twists play fair by hiding clues in plain sight
  • Twists exploit cognitive biases the audience brings into the theater
  • The audience's own assumptions are the mechanism of their deception
  • Structural twists that violate formal expectations are the most devastating

The deepest purpose of a plot twist is not surprise. It is revelation — showing the audience that they were looking at the truth the entire time and chose to see something else. The best twists are mirrors.
