LESSON 1 · Movie Magic: Behind the Camera

Light Is Everything

The word cinematography traces back to the Greek for movement, but the craft itself is about controlling light. Roger Deakins, who shot Blade Runner 2049 and 1917, describes his job as creating emotional states through the quality, direction, and color of light.

Hard, directional light creates sharp shadows and dramatic contrast (film noir, horror). Soft, diffused light creates warmth and intimacy (romance, memory). The choice is never purely aesthetic — it communicates the emotional reality of the scene as powerfully as any dialogue.
