LESSON 1 · Movie Magic: Behind the Camera
Natural Light Masters
Some cinematographers, like Emmanuel Lubezki, prefer natural light exclusively. The Revenant was shot entirely using available sunlight, creating images of raw, unmanipulated beauty that artificial lighting cannot replicate. Each shot had to be captured within a narrow daily window, making every frame a race against the fading sky.

Natural light filmmaking is extremely difficult because conditions change constantly. Lubezki's achievement in The Revenant required shooting only during the "magic hour" — the brief period when sunlight creates a golden, diffused quality that flatters every surface.
