Sound that crosses the cut
In an **L-cut**, the audio from one shot keeps playing after the picture has cut to the next; in a **J-cut**, the next scene's sound arrives before its image. By letting sound and picture change at different moments, editors smooth the seam between scenes so the cut slips past unnoticed.
