LESSON 5 · Movie Magic: Behind the Camera

Music and Memory

Film scores exploit a neurological shortcut: music triggers memory more reliably than any other stimulus. Hearing the Harry Potter theme instantly recreates the emotional state of watching those films, regardless of how many years have passed.

This memory-triggering power means film composers are essentially programming emotional responses. A theme heard during a joyful scene becomes permanently associated with that joy. When the theme returns in a darker context, the audience feels the contrast between past joy and present pain — a sophisticated emotional manipulation using only sound.

The greatest film scores outlive their films.
