LESSON 1 · Cinema Around the World
New Wave's Living Legacy
Every independent film movement since 1960 descends from the French New Wave. American indie cinema, Dogme 95, mumblecore, and today's wave of A24 films all share New Wave DNA: small budgets, personal stories, and formal experimentation driven by artistic necessity.
The movement also set the template for youth rebellion through cinema. Young filmmakers attacking establishment conventions is now a recurring pattern — each generation rediscovers that the rules they were taught can be broken productively rather than followed obediently.
