LESSON 3 · Cinema Around the World

New Waves

A bold independent scene now sits alongside mainstream Bollywood and pushes against its rules. Films like Gully Boy, Article 15, and Masaan carry the depth of art cinema while staying easy to watch. They prove a growing appetite among Indian audiences for stories that feel honest and complicated, not just escapist.

"Bollywood" is only the Hindi-language slice. India has many film industries: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, and Kannada, each with its own stars and style. Telugu blockbusters like RRR and Baahubali broke through worldwide by fusing Indian myth and melodrama with Hollywood-scale spectacle.
