LESSON 3 · Cinema Around the World
The Song Sequence
A Bollywood song does real narrative work that newcomers often miss. In one sequence it can:
- Voice feelings a character would never say in dialogue
- Jump the story forward through months or years
- Shift the mood from comedy to heartbreak in minutes
- Stage a fantasy that the plot itself never literally allows
The number is not a pause in the film. It is doing several jobs at once that scenes alone cannot.

This logic is older than film. Opera works the same way: when a character's emotion grows too large for spoken words, the only honest response is to sing. Bollywood inherits that instinct. The song is the moment feeling overflows the script, the same impulse that has filled opera houses for centuries.
