Parallel Cinema

Alongside the masala blockbusters, India built a quieter tradition called parallel cinema, led by Satyajit Ray. His Apu Trilogy is ranked among the finest work ever filmed. These movies skipped songs and spectacle to face poverty, caste, and corruption head-on, proving Indian film could reach the artistic depth of European art cinema while staying wholly Indian.
