Producer David O. Selznick offered to finance **Bicycle Thieves** if De Sica cast **Cary Grant** as the lead. De Sica refused, saying Grant carried himself like a gentleman with no blisters on his hands. He raised the money with friends instead and cast an amateur, a factory worker, in the role.
