Vertical Cinema

Parasite (2019) is organized around a vertical axis. The Kim family lives in a semi-basement below street level — they look up at the world. The Park family lives on a hilltop in a modernist mansion designed by a famous architect. Between them sit stairs, hills, and literal levels of society.

When it rains, water flows downhill — flooding the Kims' home while the Parks enjoy fresh air. Bong makes inequality's physics visible: water, gravity, and geography work the same way in economics as in nature. Everything flows to the lowest point.
