The Flood Scene

When rain floods the Kim family's semi-basement while the Park family sleeps comfortably above, the film stages its starkest image of class. For the Parks the storm is a passing inconvenience; for the Kims it is the loss of everything they own. The same weather lands as two entirely different realities — and that gap is the whole point.

The flood is devastating because for the Kims it is not a metaphor — it is literal. While the audience reads symbolism, the characters lose their home. This dual register of meaning and reality is what lifts Parasite above ordinary social commentary.
