Dream by Design

The nested structure forced Nolan to invent a new visual language so viewers always know which layer they are in. Each dream level gets its own look and feel — a distinct color palette, weather, and physics, from a rainy city to a snowbound mountain fortress.

The trick goes deeper than visuals. Each character also plays a filmmaking role: the architect builds the world, others act, direct, and produce — a film crew hidden inside the story.
