Patterns That Endure

Musicologists find the same building blocks in melodies across centuries:

• Call and response — one phrase asks a question, and the next answers it
• Stepwise motion — melodies tend to move mostly by adjacent notes, with occasional leaps for contrast
• The arc shape — many melodies rise to a peak, then descend, creating a satisfying shape
• Motifs — short fragments of three to five notes that repeat and transform; the four-note opening of Beethoven's Fifth is the most famous
