LESSON 4 · The Science of Sound & Song

Tempo and Emotion

Film composers understand tempo intuitively. A chase scene uses fast tempos (140-180 BPM) to trigger your fight-or-flight response. A romantic scene uses slow tempos (60-80 BPM) to mirror relaxed breathing and create intimacy.

Rubato — deliberately stretching and compressing tempo — is one of the most expressive tools a performer has. Classical pianists use it to breathe emotion into a phrase. Pop singers fall slightly behind the beat for a laid-back feel or push ahead for urgency.
