LESSON 2 · Music Through the Ages

Jazz's Lasting Impact

Jazz's influence reaches far beyond its own genre:

  • Improvisation became central to rock (Hendrix, the Grateful Dead), live electronic sets, and even comedy
  • Extended chords (7ths, 9ths, 11ths) born in jazz now run through R&B, neo-soul, lo-fi hip-hop, and film scoring
  • Rhythmic freedom — jazz's swing feel and syncopation became the rhythmic DNA of popular music
  • The jam session model inspired rap cyphers and electronic collaborations
  • Social change — jazz was one of the first art forms where Black and white Americans performed together, challenging segregation through music

Jazz taught that rules exist to be understood, then transcended.
