LESSON 2 · Music Through the Ages

Jazz Listening Guide

To appreciate jazz, focus on the conversation between musicians. In a combo, each player listens and responds in real time: the bassist walks a steady pulse, the drummer adds rhythmic commentary, the pianist comps chords, and the soloist tells a melodic story over that foundation.

Trading fours — where soloists alternate every four bars — is jazz democracy in action. Each musician gets equal time to speak, and the excitement comes from how each one answers what came before.

Start with accessible recordings: Miles Davis's Kind of Blue uses simple modes that feel calm and spacious. Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" is in unusual 5/4 time but still feels natural.
