LESSON 3 · Music Through the Ages
Rock kept reinventing itself through cultural upheaval:
- British Invasion (1960s) — The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and The Who reimported Black American music back to America, transformed and amplified
- Psychedelic Rock (late 1960s) — Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane expanded the sonic palette with studio effects, feedback, and counterculture ideology
- Punk (1970s) — The Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Clash stripped rock to three chords and raw energy, rejecting the excesses of prog rock
- Grunge (1990s) — Nirvana and Pearl Jam channeled Gen X alienation into distorted guitars and confessional lyrics.
