LESSON 4 · Music Through the Ages

The Craft of Flow

Flow — the rhythmic pattern of a rapper's delivery — is as varied and personal as a fingerprint. Eminem packs rapid-fire internal rhymes into each bar, while Kendrick Lamar shifts between conversational lines and staccato bursts to match his content.

Great rappers juggle three things at once: rhyme scheme (where rhymes fall), rhythm (how syllables hit the beat), and breath control (sustaining complex patterns without gasping). Early gear shaped the sound too — the SP-1200 sampler capped samples at 10 seconds, forcing the creative chopping that became an art form.
