LESSON 6 · Music Through the Ages

The Streaming Revolution

Streaming did not just change distribution — it changed the music itself. When songs are measured by individual plays rather than album sales, the incentives shift. Artists front-load hooks, shorten songs, and release singles more often. The average song length dropped from about 4:30 in the 1990s to under 3:20 today.

Spotify reports over 760 million monthly active users. It does not pay a fixed per-stream rate; royalties are calculated from revenue pools, stream share, country, subscription type, and rights-holder agreements. Effective estimates often land around fractions of a cent per stream, so most artists still need touring, merchandise, sync, or direct fan support.
