What Defines a Rock Subgenre

Subgenres are defined by specific musical and cultural characteristics. Tempo separates doom metal (slow, crushing) from thrash (fast, aggressive). Production style separates lo-fi indie (deliberately rough) from progressive rock (polished and complex).

Vocal style is another divider — punk's shouted vocals versus shoegaze's breathy whispers versus metal's guttural growls. Lyrical themes matter too: goth rock explores darkness and death, ska-punk is party music, and post-rock often has no lyrics at all.
