It started as slang long before it named a genre
DJ **Alan Freed** is widely credited with popularizing 'rock and roll' as a music label in the early 1950s. But the words were already old **rhythm-and-blues slang**, used in songs years earlier — so the genre borrowed its name from the music it grew out of.
