Flow: the Secret Ingredient

Flow is how a rapper's words ride the beat. Two rappers can say the same words over the same beat and sound completely different because of flow. It covers rhythm, cadence, emphasis, breathing, and how syllables line up with the beat. Flow is what separates a technician from a true stylist.

Tupac's flow was clear, rhythmic, and emotionally direct — every word lands exactly where your ear expects it. Notorious B.I.G. had a looser, jazz-like flow that played around the beat. Kendrick Lamar shifts his flow several times within a single verse, using rhythm changes to mark new sections and signal shifts in mood.
