The Tools of the Underground

Underground producers often use tools that mainstream producers ignore. Modular synthesizers — systems where individual modules are connected by patch cables — create sounds that are unrepeatable because the exact cable routing is unique each time.

Field recordings — sounds captured from the real world (rain, machinery, conversations) — become musical material. Circuit bending involves deliberately modifying toy instruments and electronics to produce unexpected sounds.
