LESSON 6 · Genre Deep Cuts

Blues and Soul Decoded

These genres gave modern music its emotional vocabulary:

  • The 12-bar blues — a chord progression still used in rock, jazz, and country
  • Call and response — a singer states a line and instruments or backup singers answer, an African tradition that became soul's signature structure
  • The blue note — a pitch bent slightly flat, sitting between major and minor to convey emotional ambiguity
  • Gospel influence — soul's intense vocal delivery comes straight from Black church singing traditions
  • Emotional authenticity — the defining value of both genres
