The Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership is the most successful in music history, credited on over 180 songs. Their styles fit together perfectly. Lennon brought raw honesty, wit, and experimental daring, while McCartney brought melodic genius, versatility, and pop craftsmanship.

By 1966, they were increasingly writing separately while still sharing credit. This creative tension produced some of their best work — each trying to outdo the other. "Strawberry Fields Forever" (Lennon) and "Penny Lane" (McCartney) came out of the same recording sessions.
