LESSON 3 · Legends of the Stage

The Thriller Album Decoded

Thriller succeeded because of its producer, Quincy Jones, who brought jazz sophistication to pop production. Jones assembled the best session musicians in the world and pushed Jackson to sing outside his comfort zone.

The album covers every base: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" (dance funk), "The Girl Is Mine" (soft duet with Paul McCartney), "Thriller" (horror pop), "Beat It" (rock crossover), "Billie Jean" (synth-driven mystery). This range was strategic — every radio format had a song to play.
