The One Drop

Reggae's signature drum pattern is the one drop — the drummer leaves out the usual downbeat kick, dropping the beat that listeners expect to land hardest. That open space is what gives the music its floating, swaying pull.

The missing strong beat creates a feeling of suspension and release, a constant lean-forward groove. It mirrors the spiritual themes in many reggae lyrics: patience, surrender, and the sense that the resolution is always just ahead.
