Why the Advance Is a Loan
That big signing check is not a gift. It is recoupable — the label pays artists first, then claws it all back out of their royalties before sending a cent more.
So an artist can have a hit, sell out shows, and still owe money. Until the advance, the video budget, and the marketing are fully recouped, their record royalty statements often read $0. The art is selling; the artist is still in the red.
