LESSON 3 · How the Music Business Works

Multiple Income Streams

A sustainable music career usually requires more than one source of money:

  • Live performance — still the most reliable income for most working musicians, from local venues to festivals
  • Streaming revenue — significant only at scale, in the millions of monthly listeners
  • Sync placements — licensing songs for TV, film, ads, and games, often the most lucrative per-song income
  • Merchandise — T-shirts, vinyl, and limited editions, with high margins and a strong fan connection
  • Fan subscriptions — Patreon, Substack, or membership platforms where dedicated fans pay monthly

The artists who last are those who diversify. Relying on any single stream is fragile.
