Ancient Greek drama
Opera was born around 1600 when a circle of Florentine scholars and musicians, the Camerata, tried to revive what they believed ancient Greek tragedy had been: a unified performance in which words were sung rather than spoken. Their experiments to bring that lost art back to life produced the first operas.
