LESSON 5 · Baroque: Drama in Paint

Festival Spectacle

Baroque spectacle reached its most extreme form in festival culture. Royal weddings, military victories, and holidays were marked with temporary architecture, firework displays, and theatrical performances that often cost more than permanent buildings. These were deliberately ephemeral works — built to dazzle for one night, then torn down. The waste was the point: only a ruler with unlimited resources could afford to burn a fortune on a single evening and prove his power by doing so.
