LESSON 4 · From Excess to Order: Rococo & Neoclassicism

Aesthetic as Argument

Neoclassical artists didn't simply prefer classical style — they wielded it as a weapon against aristocratic culture. Every clean line criticized Rococo curves; every austere Roman scene attacked the frivolity of court art. Ancient subjects like Spartan warriors and stoic philosophers sent pointed messages about civic virtue and self-sacrifice.

Jacques-Louis David became the movement's most effective painter. His Oath of the Horatii showed brothers pledging to die for their republic — an explosive theme in a nation questioning its monarchy.
