The Image Emperor

Napoleon Bonaparte understood that controlling his image was as important as winning battles. He hired Jacques-Louis David and later Antoine-Jean Gros to create paintings that shaped how Europe perceived him.

Napoleon personally directed how he should be depicted: calm amid chaos, hand in his jacket (not a medical issue — a classical pose of authority), always taller than those around him despite being average height.
