Dissolving the World

Turner's late paintings pushed representation to its absolute limit. Mountains, ships, and buildings became suggestions rather than depictions — forms emerging from and disappearing into atmospheric chaos that seemed to vibrate with energy.

His technique was as radical as his vision. Turner applied paint with palette knives, rags, and even his fingernails, building up layers of translucent color that created luminous effects impossible with conventional brushwork. He sometimes scratched into wet paint with his thumbnail to achieve specific textures.
