LESSON 3 · The Romantic Revolution in Art

Turner's Modern Afterlife

Turner's influence on later art was enormous but delayed. The Impressionists discovered his work on visits to London and recognized a kindred spirit — an artist who put optical experience ahead of narrative. Monet especially admired his gift for capturing fleeting light.

The Abstract Expressionists claimed him as an even more direct ancestor. Mark Rothko's hovering blocks of color and Barnett Newman's luminous fields echo Turner's late work, where subject matter dissolves entirely into pure color. He showed that a painting could move the viewer through light alone, with no story to tell.
