A long-told story claims Delacroix put himself in the painting as the man in the **top hat carrying a rifle**, on Liberty's left. Art historians treat this as an appealing legend rather than something the artist confirmed. What is certain is that he lived through the July Revolution of 1830 but did not take up arms.
