Liberty Leading the People is perhaps history's most famous political painting, yet its message stays open to debate. It is honest about the violence of revolt — the bodies, the smoke — while still romanticizing the cause those fighters died for.
That double vision is the point. Delacroix neither hides the cost nor abandons the ideal, which is why the same canvas has been claimed by very different politics ever since.
