LESSON 4 · Art at the Edge: Early 1900s

A Style Unmistakable

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) developed one of the most instantly recognizable styles in art: elongated necks, tilted oval heads, almond-shaped eyes (often blank), small mouths, and simplified features. His figures look like no one you've ever met — and yet they feel intensely present and alive.

The Unpainted Eyes

When a friend asked why one portrait had empty eyes, Modigliani reportedly said he would paint them in once he knew her soul. He often left the irises unpainted on purpose. The blank, almond-shaped gaze became a signature — it makes the faces feel inward and unreadable rather than unfinished.
